Opening: Ascetic Natural
Chad Burt was born in Nova Scotia (Canada) in 1978. He lives and works in London. He studied visual art at Mount Allison University, New Brunswick (Canada), and is a graduate of MFA in Fine Arts at Goldsmiths, University of London. He is represented by Herrmann Germann Contemporary. His new exhibition "Ascetic Natural" will be shown till 18 November.

Ascetic Natural

A wanderer stumbles in a seemingly psychedelic trance through a northern landscape. A probably-insane searcher. Pathetic archetype. The foothills of the Canadian rockies of Alberta. A place that seems at once alien and familiar. A dream-like landspace. Who is this wandering figure? A cartoon character? A hermetic monk? Your uncle on mushrooms? Zarathustra!?
‘The ascetic practices most familiar to us, those responsible for guiding our halting evolution from natural to human animals, have exhausted their usefulness for the continued development of humankind. They have furthermore engendered the “will to nothingness” that now threatens our very existence.’
‘To translate man back into nature; to become master over the many vain and overly enthusiastic interpretations and connotations that have so far been scrawled and painted over that eternal basic text [Grundtext] of homo natura.’
What is he searching for? Is it his forever lost first-nature?
‘While Nature has proven its resiliency time and again in this century, confounding all attempts by philosophers and scientists to vanquish it as a ground or condition of political life, the perfection of humankind may nevertheless lie beyond the plenum of Nature, in a cyborg artifice or machinic simulacrum of human “nature.”’
Painting is the foundation and point of departure for Burt´s practice. The images and ideas he formulates through painting are often extended to the physical world as objects, performances, or videos which are juxtaposed and set in relationships with the paintings. An engagement with transcendence, spirituality, and belief is at the crux of his practice, although it is ambivalence in thinking about these matters that drives his work.

Guerilla Gardening 2.0
Das Projekt von Aline Veillat wurde speziell für das Programm der «Kabine en Route» konzipiert, welches von Claude Hidber und Raphael Perret initiert und kuratiert wird. Für dieses Programm wurde eine ehemalige Telefonkabine zu einem mobilen Ausstellungsort für Medienkunst umgebaut. Die Kabine ist ebenfalls am Shift Festival in Basel und im Cabaret Voltaire zu Gast.
In der Installation «Guerrilla Gardening 2.0», aktualisiert die Künstlerin die Kabine mit dem Wissen, dass die heutigen Telefonzellen keine Kabinen mehr mit nur einem Telefon sind, sondern eher einem Zugangspunkt in die Welt des WEB 2.0, bzw. der sozialen Medien gleichen. In diesem Kontext versucht «Guerrilla Gardening 2.0» auszuloten, wie Pflanzen, Lebewesen – welche eine entscheidende Rolle für die Balance auf unserem Planet spielen – Zugang und Mitspracherecht in den heutigen sozialen Medien haben können. Bei der Installation in der Wäscherei Kunstverein Zürich beteiligen sich Pflanzen im WEB 2.0.
Die Installation reiht sich in eine Serie von Aline Veillats Pflanzenkunst-Projekten ein. Aline Veillat ist auf der Insel La Réunion (FR) geboren, studierte Kunst in Lausanne und Paris und lebt und arbeitet seit einigen Jahren in Basel. Vor kurzem zeigte die Künstlerin Arbeiten in China und in der Schweiz Demnächst folgt eine Ausstellung im Haus für elektronische Künste in Basel.

Curatorial Practice
Annette Schindler is a curator known for her exhibitions, publications and projects which have contributed to contemporary discourses such as, feminist approaches, critical art practice, digital cultural production and technoculture. She developed the concept for the new media art space [plug in] in Basel where she is director since 2000. The space focuses on experimental art production with new media. From 1997-2000 she directed the Swiss Institute in New York and from 1992 – 1997 the Kunsthaus Glarus in Switzerland.
